Why does an oval lab grown diamond cost less than a round one?
Two reasons, and both work in your favour.
Cutting a round brilliant discards more of the original rough crystal than cutting an oval does, so a round of the same carat, colour and clarity generally costs more. The gap is not enormous but it is consistent, and it applies to lab grown stones exactly as it does to mined ones.
The second reason is that an oval looks bigger than its weight suggests. The shape is elongated, so more of the stone sits face up across the finger where you see it, rather than hidden in depth below the setting. A one carat oval reads larger than a one carat round to most eyes. Put those two effects together and an oval is the most efficient way to buy apparent size.
How do you choose an oval lab grown diamond engagement ring?
Start with the outline. Ovals vary a great deal in how elongated they are, and the ratio of length to width changes the character of the ring completely. A narrower oval looks elegant and lengthens the finger. A rounder one reads softer and closer to a cushion. Neither is correct and it is worth seeing two side by side before you decide.
