Buying a lab grown diamond engagement ring in 2026

What is a lab grown diamond?

A lab grown diamond is a real diamond grown in a controlled environment rather than mined from the ground. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined stone. The only difference is where it formed and how long it took.

Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. Chemically, physically and optically they are diamonds, and no one can tell the difference by eye. Specialist equipment reads the growth pattern to identify how a stone formed. Every centre stone we set arrives with a grading report that states plainly that it was grown in a laboratory.

How much does a lab grown diamond engagement ring cost in the UK?

We price the setting and the diamond separately, so you can see exactly what each part costs before you commit to either. Our settings start at £530 and every one holds a stone from 0.5ct to 3.0ct, in 9k, 14k or 18k gold, or 950 platinum. You then choose your diamond and the price updates as you go. In practice around 1,500 pounds reaches a two carat certified centre in gold, and around 3,000 pounds reaches three carats. Nothing is added at checkout.

What do your ring settings cost?

Twelve of our settings, with the price of the setting itself. Every one takes a lab grown diamond from 0.5ct to 3.0ct, and the diamond is priced separately on top.

Do lab grown diamonds hold their value?

Not in the way a mined diamond might, and we would rather tell you that up front. There is very little resale market for lab grown stones, so buy one to wear rather than as an investment. What you get in return is a noticeably larger and better graded diamond for the same budget.

What is the difference between CVD and HPHT lab grown diamonds?

Both produce real diamonds by different routes. HPHT recreates the heat and pressure found deep underground. CVD builds the crystal layer by layer from a carbon rich gas at much lower pressure. Cut quality affects how a finished stone actually looks far more than which method grew it.

Are your lab grown diamonds certified?

The centre stone in every engagement ring we make is independently graded, and arrives with a report from IGI, the International Gemological Institute, covering cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, and confirming that the diamond is laboratory grown. Finished rings are hallmarked at the London Assay Office before they leave the workshop.

How long does a Luma engagement ring take to make?

We make every ring to order in our Hatton Garden workshop and most are ready within 4 to 6 weeks. A full bespoke commission, designed from scratch with you, takes 6 to 8 weeks from the point you sign the design off. If you have a date to work to, tell us before you order and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Where are your engagement rings made?

In our own workshop in Hatton Garden, London, seven minutes walk from Farringdon. You are welcome to book an appointment and see loose stones and settings in person before anything is made for you.
