Can you buy a diamond engagement ring for under £1,000?
Yes, and not a token one. A two carat IGI certified lab grown centre in a 9k gold solitaire sits inside a thousand pounds at our pricing.
That answer tends to be met with suspicion, so it is worth being plain about why it is true. A lab grown diamond is the same material as a mined one. Same carbon crystal, same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, same optical behaviour, graded by the same laboratories to the same standards. What it does not carry is the cost of extraction and a supply chain with a margin taken at every stage. That cost is most of the price of a mined diamond, and removing it is what puts two carats inside this budget.
Nobody can tell by looking. Identifying how a diamond formed takes specialist equipment that reads the growth pattern, which is why every stone we set arrives with a report stating plainly that it was grown in a laboratory.
What does a lab grown engagement ring under £1,000 get you?
A hallmarked solid gold setting and a substantial certified stone, with the choice of how to split the two.
Take the Anouk at £530 in 9k gold and the rest of the budget goes to the diamond. That reaches two carats. What is the catch with a lab grown diamond at this price?
There is one, and we would rather tell you now than have you find out later. Lab grown diamonds have very little resale value. There is almost no secondary market for them, so buy one to wear rather than as an investment.
What you get in exchange is the stone itself. A considerably larger, better graded diamond than the same money reaches anywhere in the mined market, set in solid gold and hallmarked in London. For most people proposing, that is the right trade. If you want a ring that holds a resale value, the honest answer is that a mined diamond at this budget will be very small indeed and will still lose money the moment you leave the shop.
How do you make £1,000 go furthest?
Choose 9k gold. It is hallmarked solid gold, harder than 18k because of the alloy mix, and it wears well through daily life. Choosing it over 18k moves several hundred pounds from the metal straight into the stone.
Keep the setting plain. A solitaire holds one diamond and nothing else, so there are no accent stones to pay for and far less bench time than a halo or a trilogy.
And put what is left into cut before carat. A well cut stone throws more light than a larger, duller one at the same money, and cut is the one thing you cannot correct afterwards.
