Lab grown diamonds are often described as the eco friendly alternative to mined diamonds. That framing is broadly fair, but the detail matters. Not every lab grown diamond brand approaches sourcing, transparency and sustainability in the same way.
If you are comparing UK jewellers, here is what to look at and what questions to ask.

What makes a lab grown diamond brand genuinely eco friendly?
The diamond itself avoids the environmental impact of mining: no open pits, no ecosystem displacement, no water table contamination. But growing a diamond still takes energy. The environmental footprint depends on the growth method (HPHT or CVD), where the lab is located and what energy source powers it.
If the entire sustainability message is one line about lab grown diamonds being "better for the planet," that is marketing, not transparency.
Beyond the diamond, look at metal sourcing (recycled or responsibly sourced?), manufacturing location (local or outsourced?) and whether the brand provides third party certification for their stones.
UK brands worth knowing about
Queensmith operates out of Hatton Garden and offers a wide range of engagement rings including lab grown options. They have a strong reputation for craftsmanship and an in person design experience. Their sustainability information is present but broad, without granular detail on energy sources or supply chain specifics.
Novita Diamonds is an online first lab grown diamond brand with a focus on engagement rings. They offer competitive pricing and a decent range of styles. Their marketing emphasises the ethical benefits of lab grown diamonds, though specific sourcing documentation is limited on the public facing site.
Ethica Diamonds positions itself as one of the most sustainability focused brands in the space and references renewable energy in their diamond production. Their branding leans heavily into the ethical angle, though the supporting documentation tends to be narrative rather than data driven.
The Diamond Store is a well established online jeweller with a lab grown range alongside their natural diamond offering. They provide accessible educational content for first time buyers and their pricing is competitive. Sustainability statements are present but high level.

What to ask any jeweller before you buy
A few questions that will tell you a lot about how seriously a brand takes transparency: Where are your diamonds grown, and by what method? What certification body grades your stones? Where is the jewellery manufactured? What is your metal sourcing policy? Can you provide documentation on any of the above?
If the answers are vague or redirect you to generic sustainability pages, that is worth noting.
