The short answer is no. You cannot distinguish a lab grown diamond from a mined diamond by looking at it. Not with the naked eye, not under a standard jeweller's loupe, and not under normal lighting conditions. They are the same material.
This catches a lot of people off guard, so it is worth explaining why.

Why they look identical
A lab grown diamond has the same chemical composition (pure carbon), the same crystal structure, the same hardness and the same optical properties as a mined diamond. Light interacts with both in exactly the same way. The brilliance, fire and scintillation are identical because the physics are identical.
A diamond is defined by its atomic structure, not by where that structure was assembled.
What gemologists actually use to tell them apart
Professional gemological laboratories use highly specialised equipment to identify a diamond's origin. The main method is photoluminescence spectroscopy, which analyses how the diamond responds to specific wavelengths of light. Lab grown diamonds (particularly CVD grown stones) show distinct spectral signatures that differ from natural diamonds.
This is not something you can do at home or in a shop. It requires lab grade equipment and trained technicians. The average jeweller cannot tell the difference either, which is exactly why third party certification exists.

The grading report is what matters
Every reputable lab grown diamond comes with a grading report from an independent body. At Luma, all our diamonds are graded by the IGI (International Gemological Institute). The report confirms the diamond's cut, colour, clarity, carat weight and origin (lab grown).
Most lab grown diamonds also carry a laser inscription on the girdle, the thin edge of the stone, that matches the report number. This is microscopic and invisible to the naked eye, but it provides a permanent link between the physical stone and its documentation.
So what should you actually focus on?
Rather than worrying about whether someone can "spot" that your diamond is lab grown, focus on the things that determine how it looks on your hand: the cut quality, the colour grade, the clarity and the carat weight. These are the 4Cs, and they matter equally whether the diamond is lab grown or mined.
Our complete guide to lab grown diamonds explains each of these in detail, including how to prioritise them when choosing a stone.
