Each piece should sit in its own compartment, ideally lined with soft fabric, so chains do not tangle and harder stones do not scratch softer settings. A box with individual ring slots and chain hooks is the simplest solution, and most jewellers supply one with new pieces.
Diamond is the hardest gemstone and can scratch every other stone in your collection, so keep diamond rings and stud earrings separated from softer stones like opal, emerald and pearl. Keep the box somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight. Humidity and temperature swings can damage some stones, particularly pearls, opals and turquoise, which prefer stable, slightly humid air.
Pearls in particular should be kept away from other jewellery and stored in their own pouch. If you travel with jewellery, a small fabric roll keeps pieces in place without the bulk of a box.
