How to Care for Your Diamond Jewellery

Diamonds are the hardest material on earth, but the jewellery they sit in still needs looking after. Gold can scratch, prongs can loosen, and everyday buildup from soap, moisturiser and skin oils will dull the sparkle over time. Here is how to keep your pieces looking their best.

Regular cleaning at home

The simplest method works the best. Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild washing up liquid. Soak your jewellery for 20 to 30 minutes, then gently brush with a soft toothbrush, paying attention to the underside of the stone where dirt collects. Rinse under warm running water and pat dry with a lint free cloth.

Do this once a week for rings you wear daily, and once a month for pieces worn less often.

What to avoid

Do not use bleach, chlorine or harsh chemicals. Remove rings before cleaning with household products. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless you are confident the stone is secure in its setting, as the vibrations can loosen prongs over time.

Remove diamond jewellery before swimming (chlorine in pools, salt in the sea), applying perfume or moisturiser, and any heavy physical activity that could knock or catch the piece.

Storage

Store each piece separately to avoid scratching. Diamonds can scratch other diamonds and will scratch gold or platinum. A soft pouch or individual compartment in a jewellery box is ideal. Do not throw everything in together.

Prong checks

If you wear a ring daily, especially an engagement ring, check the prongs every few months. Gently push the stone with your fingertip. If there is any movement, stop wearing it and get the prongs tightened. A loose setting is the most common way people lose stones.

Professional servicing

Once a year, it is worth having your most worn pieces professionally cleaned and inspected. A jeweller can check prong integrity, polish out surface scratches on the metal, and give the piece a deep clean that restores the original finish.

Lab grown diamonds and care

There is no difference in how you care for a lab grown diamond versus a mined diamond. They are the same material with the same hardness and durability. Everything above applies equally to both.
