Are lab grown diamonds certified, and what is an IGI certificate?

Yes. Lab grown diamonds are graded and certified by the same independent gem laboratories that grade natural diamonds, most commonly IGI and GIA. An IGI certificate, from the International Gemological Institute, is an independent report that documents a specific diamond's carat weight, cut, colour and clarity, the four Cs, along with its measurements and the fact that it is lab grown. It is effectively the diamond's identity document, confirming that its quality has been assessed by a neutral expert rather than by the seller. Every lab grown diamond Luma sells is IGI certified, so you can see exactly what you are buying and compare stones on a like for like basis. When buying any diamond, lab grown or natural, you should always expect a certificate from a recognised laboratory. A stone without one cannot be properly verified.

What is on an IGI certificate

The four Cs (carat, cut, colour, clarity), the diamond's measurements, a plot of any inclusions, polish and symmetry grades, fluorescence, and a clear statement that the diamond is lab grown. Each certificate carries a unique report number you can verify on the IGI website.

Why certification matters

It removes the seller from the grading. Without an independent certificate, you are taking the retailer's word on the diamond's quality. With one, you have a neutral third party assessment, which is the standard you should expect on any diamond purchase.

IGI vs GIA

Both are major independent gem laboratories. IGI is the most widely used for lab grown diamonds and has been certifying them at scale longer than any other lab. GIA also certifies lab grown diamonds. The grading standards are essentially the same, and both certificates are accepted across the trade.

Related questions

How do I verify my IGI certificate?

Every IGI certificate has a unique report number. Enter it at IGI.org to confirm the certificate is genuine and matches the diamond described.

Can a diamond be sold without a certificate?

It can, but it should not be. Without independent certification, you have no neutral assessment of what the stone actually is. Always ask for a certificate from a recognised laboratory.

What if I lose my certificate?

You can request a replacement from the laboratory using the original report number, or have the diamond re-graded if the original certificate cannot be traced.
